Angelica (Angelica archangelica) is a relatively new discovery for the hair care industry. This plant which usually grows in high, humid places (usually mountainous or hilly environment) was previously used in treating cold, female hormonal imbalances, pleurisy, decreasing flatulence and as an expectorant. In alternative medicine most of the plant is used for different purposes. Dried seeds and root are used for angelica extracts, while fresh leaves and stems are used as such or in varied combinations with other herbs which can complete or potentate its effects.
Hair Growth by Blocking DHT
Hair problems are mainly addressed with angelica root extract. Angelica is one of the major herbals allies in the fight against hair loss. The root is a rich source of phytoestrogens which inhibit DHT production, the hormone derivate which is one of the major factors triggering male alopecia. Once the quantity of DHT from the body decreases, the hair loss is stopped and a hair growth treatment can be started in order to resuscitate the affected hair follicles.
Furthermore, angelica root is also a source of vitamin B12 which contributes to alleviating conditions such as anemia and high blood pressure. A variety of minerals contributes to the well-being of the human body, which indirectly affects hair growth. For example, if the blood pressure is normal and the blood circulates normally through all blood vessels, it will reach the hair follicle, providing it with necessary nutrients and oxygen for a good functioning. Furthermore, if applied directly on the skin (in topical ointments, creams or special hair care products), the angelica root extract nourishes the hair follicle, strengthening it and thus helping it recover from the DHT “attacks”.
